The four phases, explained without the jargon

Menstrual, follicular, ovulation, luteal. What each one feels like for her — and what it actually means for you.

Most articles about the menstrual cycle are written by clinicians for women. This one's written for the partner standing in the kitchen trying to figure out whether tonight is "leave her alone" or "suggest a movie".

01Menstrual· Days 1–5

Feel: Tired. Crampy. Inward. Often emotional. Wants to be horizontal, fed, and not asked to make decisions.

Do: Comfort food (especially carbs, chocolate, anything warm). Heat pack. Take over the small chores without making a big deal of it. Don't plan anything social unless she initiates. Don't bring up that thing she did that bothered you.

Skip: Asking what's wrong. Suggesting she 'just push through it'. Booking dinner with your friends for Saturday.

02Follicular· Days 6–13

Feel: Energy rising. Optimistic. Creative. Up for new things. Patience for your bullshit is at its highest.

Do: Suggest the new restaurant. Try the new recipe together. Make plans with friends. If there's a hard conversation you've been putting off, this is your window. She has the bandwidth.

Skip: Wasting it. This is your sky-blue week. Don't spend it on the couch unless that's what she actually wants.

03Ovulation· Days 14–17

Feel: Peak energy. Most social. Often most physically confident. Libido often spikes. Most expressive, most magnetic.

Do: Plan the date. Tell her she looks incredible (because she'll feel like she does). Say yes to her ideas. Take photos — she'll thank you later.

Skip: Being passive. This is the week your relationship gets recharged if you show up — or feels stagnant if you don't.

04Luteal· Days 18–28 (varies)

Feel: Energy drops over the week. Patience shortens. Sensitivity to noise, criticism, surprises all heighten. Often nesting — wants the house tidy and quiet. Last 3–7 days are usually the hardest (PMS).

Do: Reduce friction. Cook the meal. Do the laundry. Suggest the cosy night in before she has to. Order her favourite food without asking. Let small things go.

Skip: Starting arguments about household stuff. Surprise plans. Asking 'is everything okay?' with the wrong tone. Bringing up money.

The big point

Nothing in any of these phases is her "personality changing." It's biology + the same person you know having a different amount of capacity that day. The most attractive thing you can do — emotionally — is meet her where she is, not where she was last week.

"The phase isn't the excuse. The phase is the context."

Synced gives you the phase, the context, and three specific things to do that day. That's it. You bring the showing up.
